    Technik: Die gesamte Serie-2-Baureihe wurde im Mai 1991 (jetzt unter Ford-Regie) nochmals komplett überarbeitet und neu unter der Bezeichnung „XJS“ (Serie 3) angeboten. Bereits 1988 war bei Jaguar eine gründlich überarbeitete Ausführung der gesamten Serie-2-Baureihe intern abgeschlossen gewesen, aber aus finanziellen Gründen (Abverkauf der bestehenden Lagerbestände) wurde sie erst von 1991 bis 1993 schrittweise in die Serienfertigung überführt. Die vollständige Umrüstung kostete Jaguar insgesamt über 50 Millionen Pfund. Die auffälligsten Veränderungen ab 1991 an der Außenansicht der neuen XJS Coupé Serie 3 waren neue geteilte Rückleuchten in schwarz getönter Rechteckform, ein neuer Kühlergrill und die vorderen nun rahmenlosen und hinteren geklebten Seitenfenster. Die Position des Heckfensters wanderte im unteren Bereich weiter nach hinten, um Platz für modernere Sicherheitsgurte zu schaffen, und stand nun deutlicher nach vorn geneigt. Unter dem Blech war vieles neu konstruiert, um die Produktion mit größeren Blechen zu vereinfachen und um Kosten zu senken. Das Armaturenbrett wurde mit zusätzlichen Rundinstrumenten erneut neu gestaltet. Zur Unterscheidung gegenüber älteren Serie-2-Versionen werden diese jüngeren XJS-Modelle ab 1991 meist als XJS „Facelift“ (oder Serie 3) bezeichnet. Der neue Serie 3 wurde 1991 zunächst als XJS 4.0 Coupé Serie 3 mit dem 4,0-Liter-Sechszylinder (AJ-6) entweder mit Fünfgang-Schaltgetriebe oder einer ZF-Viergang-Automatik und als XJS 5.3 Coupé Serie 3 oder XJS 5.3 Convertible Serie 3 mit dem 5,3-Liter-V12 mit GM400-Dreigangautomatik angeboten. 1992 folgte dann noch der neue, sehr erfolgreiche XJS 4.0 Convertible Serie 3 mit dem AJ-6 Motor und 163 kW (222 PS).
