Model history

Unlike the bulky, representative predecessor of the W 116 model series, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W 126) presented in September 1979 had a more "coupé-like" appearance. Slightly longer than the previous model and with a slightly longer wheelbase, the timelessly designed new model did not look antiquated even years later. The S-Class of the W 126 model series was available with a normal wheelbase and an extended wheelbase (SEL). The smallest engine was the 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine, with the 560 with a 5.6-liter V8 engine at the top end. A total of almost 900,000 examples of the 126 model series were produced - to this day, no other S-Class has been built more often.
