Model history

The BMW M5 of the E39 generation was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998 and was offered exclusively as a sedan. At the heart of the vehicle was the newly developed 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine with 400 hp, which ensured superior performance. To simplify production, the European and North American models differed only in a few details such as turn signals, catalytic converters, and brakes. In 2000, the M5 received a facelift as part of the model update of the E39 series.
