Millions were produced, making it the best-selling car in history. Its popularity lasted until production ceased in 2003, although it has since been modernized. In the 1969 cult film Herbie, the Volkswagen Beetle appeared as Herbie, number 53, a lively and idiosyncratic car with a character of its own. Herbie became the endearing star of the film, delighting viewers and fans around the world.
