The 911 with the type code 964 was on the market from 1988 to 1994 and represented the last 911 in classic optics. After a profound crisis of meaning and sales, Porsche had found its way back to the 911, which had already been declared a discontinued model only a few years earlier. The M64, as the six-cylinder boxer is now called internally, is only related in the basic features to the 3.2-Carrera engine from its predecessor. It got new cylinders, new pistons, an optimized crankshaft, larger valves and a modified cylinder head. Also new was the all-wheel drive system called Carrera 4. For the first time in the history of the 911, a convertible was also equipped with all-wheel drive technology: the so-called 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet.
