BMW 850i E31 (1992)

Kickdown's Take

by Louis Kalendruschat

The 850i with its V12 engine is an absolute highlight for all BMW fans. The car offered here has been in family ownership for 28 years—it even still has its old DIN license plates! With its classic color combination and approximately 154,000 kilometers on the odometer, this garage-kept car would be a valuable addition to any collection.

Model history

The BMW 850i (E31) replaced the 6 Series (E24) in the early 1990s and was positioned as a luxurious flagship coupé. The body, designed by Klaus Kapitza, with pop-up headlights, incorporated stylistic elements from the BMW M1. Technically, the 8 Series was based in part on the 7 Series (E32) of the time.
Despite high expectations, sales fell short of forecasts; a total of around 30,600 units were built. There was no direct successor at first – it was not until 2003 that a large BMW coupé reappeared in the form of the 6 Series (E63).
