Model history

The BMW 3.0 CSL was developed in 1972 as a homologation model for racing and is now an icon among classic BMW coupés. The "L" in the name stands for "light" – the vehicle was specifically weight-optimized by using thinner sheet metal, aluminum body parts, and eliminating insulation. The CSL was built exclusively for the European market – the models intended for the British market were somewhat more comfort-oriented.
