Model history
The BMW 3.0 CSL was developed in 1972 as a homologation model for racing and is now an icon among classic BMW coupes. The "L" in the name stands for "light" – the vehicle was specifically weight-optimized by using thinner sheet metal, aluminum body parts, and eliminating insulation. The CSL was built exclusively for the European market – the models intended for the British market were somewhat more comfort-oriented. The final version from 1973, with a 3.2-liter engine and legendary aerodynamics including a rear wing, became particularly well known – earning the model the nickname "Batmobile." The CSL was very successful in motorsports, especially in the touring car championship of the 1970s.
