Just one year after the launch of the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz premiered a coupé series based on the top-of-the-range saloon. The coupé body differed from the saloon in that it had smaller headlights and the fog lights were integrated into the bumper on the coupé: This made the radiator grille wider and incorporated it into the hood. The lack of B-pillars and the side windows, which could also be fully retracted at the rear, resulted in a typical hardtop look. Over 70,000 units of the C 126 series were built - with the 560 SEC at the top of the model range.
