BMW M3 E30 Gr.A (1987)

Leonard Deppen

Kickdown's Take

by Leonard Deppen

A Group A-spec E30 M3 rally car, built with racing parts from BMW M GmbH, is a true rarity: there are only a few dozen such vehicles in the world. The white two-door model was built from 2007 to 2010 on a bare chassis, with approximately 30,000€ invested in the rebuild. The Evolution II body kit, Matter roll cage, FIA-approved safety fuel tank, and Sparco bucket seats are all listed in the paperwork, and the body is in very good condition. With 279 PS, TÜV certification valid through 07/2027, and registration, this is a dream come true for motorsports fans!

History of the Model

The history of the BMW M3 E30 Group A begins in the mid-1980s with a radical decision by BMW Motorsport GmbH under the leadership of Paul Rosche: Instead of modifying an existing production car for racing, BMW developed an uncompromising race car and built the 5,000 road-going versions required for FIA homologation. When the M3 made its Group A debut in 1987, it took the world by storm. At its heart was the legendary S14 four-cylinder engine, which carried the DNA of the Formula 1 turbo engine. Combined with perfectly balanced weight distribution, consistent lightweight construction, and sophisticated aerodynamics, the M3 immediately became the benchmark in international touring car racing. As early as its debut year in 1987, Roberto Ravaglia secured the title in the first and only World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) behind the wheel of the M3. In the years that followed, the M3 dominated racetracks worldwide. Whether in the fiercely competitive DTM, the European Championship, or at the prestigious 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps—the Munich-built perennial favorite was virtually unbeatable. To hold its own against emerging turbocharged competition (such as the Ford Sierra Cosworth), BMW continuously refined the car. Through the “Evo 1,” “Evo 2,” and ultimately the “Sport Evolution” iterations, the displacement grew from 2.3 to 2.5 liters, while power climbed to a breathtaking 355 PS in the final phase. Until it was replaced in the early 1990s, the E30 M3 Group A racked up more titles, victories, and podium finishes than any other touring car before or since. It even demonstrated its brilliance in asphalt rally competitions, where it celebrated overall victories. It not only shaped the history of BMW M but is still considered the absolute icon of the golden age of touring car racing.

Summary

A 1987 BMW M3 E30 is for sale. It was rebuilt from a bare chassis to Group A specifications and completely repainted between 2007 and 2010. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is not the original and produces 279 PS (205 kW). Modifications such as a Matter roll cage, Sparco seats, Sabelt seat belts, an FIA-approved safety fuel tank, and an Evolution II body kit are listed in the paperwork. The body is in good condition, and the interior is also in good condition. The vehicle is registered, and its TĂśV inspection is valid through July 2027. There is no service history booklet; the mileage can only be partially verified through invoices. This BMW is intended for buyers looking for a street-legal Rally M3 with registered modifications.
