    Technik: Am 20. Januar 1994 begann in Japan der Verkauf der ersten Impreza-WRX-STI-Modelle, sie wurden als Limousine und als Kombi angeboten. Grundlage für den WRX STI (oft auch Impreza WRX STI Version I genannt, offiziell hatte er jedoch keine Versionsnummer) bildete der bereits seit längerem erhältliche Impreza WRX. Im März pendelte sich die Produktion der STI-Modelle bei etwa hundert Stück pro Monat ein. Der WRX STI wurde mit einem 2,0-Liter-Turbo-Boxermotor ausgestattet, der 184 kW leistet und ein maximales Drehmoment von 309 Nm liefert. Die Fahrzeugmasse beträgt 1230 kg. Er war eines der ersten Autos von Subaru, das mit dem „Driver’s Control Centre Differential“ (DCCD) ausgestattet wurde. Dieses spezielle Mitteldifferential ermöglicht dem Fahrer zu entscheiden, ob er die Justierung des Differentials dem Computer überlässt oder die Einstellungen manuell wählt. Mit einem drehbaren Regler in der Mittelkonsole kann er die Drehmomentverteilung zwischen Hinter- und Vorderachse des Allradantriebes verändern und somit maßgeblichen Einfluss auf das Straßenverhalten des Fahrzeuges nehmen. Mit der Einführung dieser Technik zielte Subaru wieder auf ambitionierte Rallyefahrer. Äußerlich unterschied er sich von den leistungsschwächeren Ausführungen durch einen riesigen Heckspoiler, große Nebelscheinwerfer und spezielle Felgen. Ein weiteres Merkmal des WRX-STI ist die Tatsache, dass er in Handarbeit hergestellt wurde. Die am Fließband produzierten WRX wurden von den Subaru-Mechanikern aufwendig in eine WRX-STI-Version umgebaut. Ab Version II wurde auch der STI am Fließband produziert. Die Ausstattung des ersten STI war spärlich: keine Lüftung, keine Vorrichtung zum Einbau elektronischer Geräte wie Autoradios oder ähnlichem. Subaru zielte mit dem WRX STI auf kleine Rallye-Teams ab, die die unnötigen Bauteile sowieso entfernt hätten. LG Tom
