Developed in response to the Chevrolet Corvette, the Thunderbird focused less on sportiness and more on comfort and style. Technik: Der Ford Thunderbird war ein vom US-amerikanischen Automobilhersteller Ford von 1955 bis 1997 und erneut von 2002 bis 2005 angebotenes, sportlich orientiertes Pkw-Modell. Der kurz T-Bird genannte Wagen gilt als einer der Klassiker des amerikanischen Automobilbaus. Er symbolisiert in den Vereinigten Staaten die 1950er und 1960er Jahre. Der Name „Thunderbird“ (deutsch: „Donnervogel“) steht für einen der am längsten in der Automobil- und Industriegeschichte durchgängig verwendeten Warennamen, vergleichbar mit Corvette oder Mustang. Angetrieben wurde der Thunderbird anfangs von einem neu konstruierten V8-Motor der Konzernschwester Mercury mit 4,8 Liter Hubraum (292 in3), der mit Holley-Doppel-Registervergaser 193 brutto SAE-HP (144 kW) bei 4400 min−1 leistete und eine Verdichtung von 8,1 : 1 hatte. Die Kraftübertragung übernahm serienmäßig ein manuelles Dreiganggetriebe; gegen Mehrpreis waren ein Viergang-Overdrive-Getriebe (Mehrpreis 110 USD) und eine Ford-O-Matic-Automatik (Mehrpreis 178 USD) erhältlich.
