Model history

The Mercedes-Benz W111, also known among enthusiasts as the "big tailfin," replaced the W180 pontoon series in 1959 and formed the basis for numerous Mercedes models in the 1960s. A typical feature was the so-called unit body, which was also used in the W110 and W112 series. Technically, the single-joint swing axle with compensating spring, familiar from the 300 SL, was particularly noteworthy. While the sedans were discontinued in 1968, the elegant coupé and convertible models remained in the lineup until 1971 and are now among the most sought-after classics of their time.
