Technik: Die Serienproduktion begann 1955. Der Wagen war ein Erfolg – in der Zeit von 1964 bis 1970 wurden jährlich über 30.000 Fahrzeuge produziert. Rund 61 Prozent (271.736 Fahrzeuge) verkaufte VW in den USA. Der in Deutschland mitunter spöttisch „Hausfrauen-Porsche“ oder „Sekretärinnen-Ferrari“ genannte „kleine“ Karmann-Ghia sah wie ein Sportwagen aus, war aber mit anfänglich 30 PS (22 kW) und 118 km/h Spitzengeschwindigkeit von sportlichen Fahrleistungen weit entfernt. Der gleich motorisierte VW Käfer 1200 erreichte 112 km/h, ein Porsche 356 1100 Bj. 1953 mit 40 PS (29 kW) 140 km/h. LG Tom
