Technik: Der ab Herbst 1977 ausgelieferte Sportwagen gewann wegen seines fortschrittlichen Designs und seiner Ausstattung bei seiner Einführung viele Auszeichnungen. Die Leser der Stuttgarter Autozeitschrift mot wählten ihn zum vernünftigsten Sportwagen des Jahres und auf der British Motor Show in Birmingham wurde ihm eine Goldmedaille vom Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers verliehen, das alle Sportwagen in den Disziplinen Design, Qualität und Komfort bewertete. 1978 wurde er als erster Sportwagen überhaupt durch eine internationale Jury von Journalisten zum europäischen Auto des Jahres gewählt. Die Exemplare des Jahrgangs 1979 erfuhren kaum Veränderungen gegenüber den Modellen des Vorjahres, außer dass es mittlerweile ein elektrisch betätigtes Schiebedach, elektrisch verstellbare Sitze und in Wagenfarbe lackierte seitliche Rammschutzleisten gab. Neu waren die seitlichen Blinker an den Vorderkotflügeln. Der 928 blieb 1980 zwar äußerlich unverändert, aber sein Motor wurde von Normalbenzin auf Superbenzin umgestellt. „Unser Ziel ist es, den Beweis dafür zu erbringen, dass man auch mit einem großvolumigen Achtzylindermotor auf vernünftige Verbrauchswerte kommen kann“, sagte der damalige Technikvorstand Helmuth Bott und hob das nun höhere Verdichtungsverhältnis hervor.
