Technik: Als vierte Karosserievariante der mittleren Klasse stellte Mercedes auf der IAA eine Limousine mit verlängertem Radstand vor. Die Serienproduktion dieser Langlimousinen begann im Mai 1990. Sie trug die Bezeichnung V 124. Damit gab es nach vierjähriger Unterbrechung wieder eine Langversion im Verkaufsprogramm. Entwickelt wurde der lange Aufbau in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Firma Binz in Lorch, die dann auch in der Serienfertigung die Rohbauarbeiten durchführte. Der Radstand wuchs um 80 Zentimeter auf 3,60 Meter, auch die Gesamtlänge legte um das gleiche Maß zu. Im Gegensatz zu ihren Vorgängermodellen präsentierten sich die Typen 250 D lang und 260 E lang mit sechs Türen und einer vollwertigen mittleren Sitzbank, die hinsichtlich Sitztiefe und Lehnenhöhe der Fondsitzreihe nahezu gleichkam. 1992 wurde der 260 E lang durch den 280 E lang ersetzt. Auch sogenannte „Stretcher“ wie Boonacker (NL) oder Haarlem b.V. (NL) boten den W 124 mit auf 3,86 m (anstatt 3,60 m) verlängertem Radstand bis 1996 an. Dabei wurde die mittlere Türe um dieselben 26 Zentimeter breiter, was etwas mehr Ästhetik im Design und mehr Komfort in der mittleren Sitzreihe bot als im Werks-Lang. Auch Motorvarianten wie 200 D oder 300 TD fanden hier Einzug. LG Tom
