Vehicle description
Model history:
The Pagoda series, as a worthy successor to the long-standing 190 SL, was created to meet growing customer and market demands. Mercedes-Benz recognized the rising expectations for increased engine power, luxurious comfort, comprehensive active and passive safety features, and more spacious interiors. In 1963, the Pagoda made its debut at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show, and from 1968, the first Mercedes-Benz SL 280 models proudly rolled off the production lines of the respected Daimler Group. The Pagoda quickly advanced to become a globally coveted vehicle and a triumph for Daimler. Its impressive design with elegant lines, the sovereign six-cylinder engine as well as the outstanding combination of aesthetics and technology have made the 280 SL a timeless classic that still makes the hearts of car lovers beat faster all over the world.
General information about the vehicle:
You will have the opportunity to call a Mercedes SL 280 your own soon in the following auction. The car carries the vehicle identification number 11304412022876 and was first registered in 1971. In the history of the vehicle four previous owners have been recorded to date. As the current owner describes, the Mercedes has been in the family for almost 40 years. This was taken over by his mother in 2013. A valid MOT sticker is present until March 2025, and the car also has a registration, is ready to drive, and the popular H license plate certifies the SL 280's classic car status. In addition, the owner states that the car has been driven accident-free in its current ownership. A current appraisal from 09/22 with the grade 2+ confirms the overall good condition of the Pagoda and indicates a market value of 138.000,00 Euro.
Exterior color/paint/body:
According to the owner, the body of this car has been completely restored. The underbody, engine compartment and sills underwent repainting. In 1985, a professional repainting from green to blue was done for the entire body. The blue is an original Mercedes color that was offered for the SL 280 at that time. Visually, the paint condition shows no defects. In combination with the distinctive upright headlights, the dark blue hardtop and the immaculate chromed elements, the offered SL 280 presents itself as an absolute gem. It is worth noting that the chromed parts still retain their shine and the hardtop is in pristine condition, as evidenced by the attached pictures. Also, as part of the restoration, the soft top was replaced and the hard top was worked on and brought to great condition. The owner emphasizes that no special or additional modifications were made to the vehicle.
Exterior Rims/Brakes/Suspension:
The original alloy wheels blend harmoniously into the overall appearance. The tires mounted on them, of the renowned Vredestein brand, have good tread depth, with the condition of the tread estimated at around 70 to 90%. The braking system is also described as extremely reliable and responsive, with a service condition of 70 to 90% also assigned to it. According to the information available to us, there are no known modifications or inconsistencies on the chassis. To get a more comprehensive impression, we recommend that you consult the professional photos and videos.
Interior:
A look at the interior quickly reveals that a lot of money and work has gone into it. The first impression is that the interior is in a very well-kept condition. As the owner explains, carpets have been completely replaced and the wood in the car was refinished a few years ago. The beige leather interior is in original condition with appropriate patina, underpinning the classic charm inside the vehicle. The dashboard with chrome trimmed gauges and the exclusive two-spoke steering wheel can also be attested to be in flawless condition. Other features of the Pagoda include power steering and a contemporary radio. As can be seen on the pictures, the entire interior presents itself apparently in a first-class condition.
Mileage:
On the timeless chrome-bordered odometer display 90,745 Km can be read, according to expert opinion and owner this value can also be reconstructed, although no checkbook is available. He certifies the displays, instruments and controls in the interior to be in flawless working order.
Engine:
The Pagoda is equipped with a powerful six-cylinder engine that delivers an output of 170 hp. The sporty performance is supported by an automatic transmission. Responsible for the unmistakable engine sound are the double-flow tailpipes. In the course of the restoration, the engine was overhauled and has been running like on day one ever since. In March of this year, the latest service was carried out. As the value appraisal, as well as the owner attests, the engine and technology run reliably and powerfully.
Underbody:
Much like the rest, the underside is also said to be in good shape. According to the owner, the underbody is completely rust-free, but welding work has been done. To ensure this condition in the long term, a cavity sealant was applied. The attached pictures provide another perspective on the underside of the SL 280.
Collectors and enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to acquire a beautiful 1971 Mercedes-Benz SL 280 Pagoda. The car's color and condition are absolutely outstanding. A value appraisal with the grade 2+ also confirms the excellent condition of the vehicle. A harmonious combination of appealing aesthetics and a captivating driving experience is offered here.
