Technik: Und wieder steht ein "Unkaputtbarer" Mercedes W124 in einem tollen Zustand zum Verkauf an (Taxifahrer und Behördenfahrzeuge aber auch Kunden haben dieses Prädikat verliehen) MB wäre wegen der Robustheit und Langläufer-Qualitäten beinah in Schwierigkeiten geraten! Die Gestaltung der Baureihe 124 zeigt eine Familienähnlichkeit zur Kompaktklasse W 201, weist aber auch eigenständige Form-Elemente auf, die hier erstmals verwendet wurden und sachlich-funktionale Hintergründe hatten. Für diese Formgebung sind Bruno Sacco, Joseph Gallitzendörfer und Peter Pfeiffer verantwortlich. Das charakteristische Heck zum Beispiel, das sich nach hinten verjüngt und an den seitlichen Oberkanten stark abgerundet ist, wirkt sich günstig auf den Luftwiderstand aus und geht auf Versuche im Windkanal zurück. Diese aerodynamischen Optimierungen führten zu einem Luftwiderstandsbeiwert (cw-Wert), der bei der Markteinführung 1984 je nach Typ 0,29 bis 0,30 betrug (spätere Versionen erreichten bis zu 0,26). Der W 124 unterbot damit den Audi 100 von 1982 mit einem cw-Wert von 0,30. Außerdem ist der W 124 80 bis 135 kg leichter als der Vorgänger W 123. Dies und der niedrigere Luftwiderstand ergaben bessere Fahrleistungen und einen geringeren Kraftstoffverbrauch.
