After 18 years of construction, Mercedes-Benz finally sent the R107 model series into well-deserved retirement in 1989. The generation change to the successor model R129 represented a quantum leap for the SL series in every respect: The new roadster not only presented itself with a radically revised design, but also came with all sorts of technical innovations in keeping with its status. For example, the outdated rear suspension of the R107 with semi-trailing arms gave way to a modern multi-link axle, and thanks to modern integral seats, optimal belt guidance could be ensured even in the absence of a B-pillar. Likewise, with the R129, a Mercedes cabriolet was equipped for the first time with an automatic roll bar, which was extended in the event of a rollover in a fraction of a second. But in addition to the numerous technical refinements, the design of the R129 at the official presentation at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1989 also caused lively enthusiasm among the audience. With the new generation, the SL series now also fitted into the brand's typical Sacco design at the time, and did not seem out of time when production was discontinued in 2001. In the almost twelve-year construction period, the R129 passes through several engine generations, and is offered consistently with various six- and eight-cylinder units – the Sindelfingen even plant a V12 engine in the top model 600SL. The timeless design and high-quality workmanship characterize the R129 model series, which today is considered one of the most sought-after modern classics from Mercedes-Benz.

In this auction, it is now possible to bid for a Mercedes-Benz 500SL of the R129 series. The roadster with the vehicle identification number WDB1290671F073132 rolled off the production line in 1992 and was first registered for road traffic on 16 November of the same year. The exact number of vehicle owners cannot be determined – but it is known that it is an imported vehicle from Spain, and was registered there on its last owner in Marbella. A history of the vehicle is not available, and whether it is a car with so-called "matching numbers" can not confirm the seller with certainty. The car was recently demonstrated in Germany for a general inspection, which is therefore not due again until May 2024. In November of this year, the SL can receive the German H approval, a valuation report is not available. The car is accompanied by a vehicle key. According to the seller, the roadster is currently in accident-free condition.

Mercedes-Benz calls the paint finish of the 500SL "blue-black metallic", which according to the information has been improved in the area of the bumper, bonnet and door. The work was apparently carried out professionally, because in the areas mentioned no differences in paint can be seen. On the exterior of the roadster, signs of wear and use of the past 30 years can be seen, but these do not go beyond minor scratches or parking bumps. Rust also does not seem to be an issue for the Spanish-born roadster, so that the body of the SL presents itself in an overall good condition. There are no defects in the soft top, and thanks to the enclosed hardtop, the roadster transforms into a genuine coupé if necessary.

Mercedes enthusiasts refer to the iconic 16-inch alloy wheels with which the 500SL is equipped as "Gullideckel". There are no optical defects in the rims, and the mounted tires with DOT 2021 are also in good condition. According to the seller, in addition to testing the chassis and brakes, the track was also set, so that there are no defects in these areas. The car is according to the information in his current possession in accident-free condition.

The interior of the R129 is as objective as ever, presenting itself in a well-kept condition. The anthracite-coloured leather seats have apparently always been treated carefully and show hardly any signs of wear. Likewise, the door panels and the center console including the numerous buttons and switches are free of damage, and look very well maintained. In addition to power steering and electric windows, the car also has heated seats, air conditioning, ABS, cruise control and radio.

In the cockpit of the SL, a mileage of 41976 km can be measured using the six-digit speedometer. This is the mileage read, which cannot be checked due to the missing history. According to the information, the instruments work without restrictions.

When the bonnet is opened, the focus falls on the heart of the roadster: the V8 engine used in various Mercedes-Benz models under the designation M119 in this configuration has a displacement of 4973 cm³ and produces a maximum output of 320 hp. Power transmission is provided by the standard 4-speed automatic transmission. The roadster received the last service at just under 41,600km in Spain, where, in addition to the change of engine and transmission oil as well as the brake fluid, an air conditioning service was also carried out and the tyres were renewed. According to the information, there are no known defects in the field of technology and engine, so that no further work is currently pending on the SL.

The subfloor is in an age-appropriate condition, even there no defects can be detected. Roadster lovers will get their money's worth with this car: The former milestone from Stuttgart convinces with its comfortable equipment and the powerful V8 engine, and should also provide its next owner with a lot of driving pleasure due to its well-kept condition.
