      Technik: Die Entwicklung begann 1981, der Produktionsstart war ursprünglich für Oktober 1989 vorgesehen. Bei Entwicklungsbeginn war der Entwicklungsaufwand mit etwa drei Milliarden Mark geplant. Der Chef-Designer war Bruno Sacco. Zwischen 1982 und 1986 wurden mehrere Gestaltungsentwürfe erarbeitet, am 9. Dezember 1986 wurde einer davon von Olivier Boulay ausgewählt. Mehrere Prototypen wurden danach getestet, und das endgültige Produktions-Design wurde 1987 eingefroren, deutsche Patente wurden am 23. Februar 1988 angemeldet. 1987 verlor der 560 SEL (W 126) den auto-motor-und-sport-Vergleichstest gegen den damals neuen BMW 750iL (E32) mit Zwölfzylindermotor, 1989 hatte dann Lexus die Oberklassen-Limousine LS 400 vorgestellt. Als Antwort auf deren Qualität und Ausstattung sah sich Daimler-Benz gezwungen, kurz vor dem Serienstart im Jahr 1991 noch Verbesserungen vorzunehmen, um die Marktpositionierung des W 140 zu festigen. Das führte zu einer Kostenüberschreitung und der Daimler-Benz-Chefentwickler Wolfgang Peter wurde entlassen. Sorry aber ich muß heute noch schmunzeln wenn die beiden Teleskopstäbe am Heck ausfahren und wenn ich eine nicht geschlossene Normgarage vorfinde indem ein W140 versucht hat Platz zu finden (c; LG Tom

        Hi Tom, vielen Dank für den Kommentar, der W 140 hat wirklich eine interessante Geschichte. Wenn ich richtig informiert bin, wurden die einklappbaren Seitenspiegel im Nachgang extra entwickelt, weil das Auto schlicht "zu breit" war. Wahrscheinlich eine Legende ist die Erzählung, dass dies geschah, weil das Auto ansonsten nicht auf den Autozug nach Sylt passte..... Die Teleskopstäbe sind jedes Mal schön anzusehen!
