Model history

The BMW Z1 was developed by BMW Technik GmbH, a subsidiary of BMW founded in 1985. Ulrich Bez, who was responsible for the project, and designer Harm Lagaay played a key role in its development. Between early 1989 and mid-1991, exactly 8,000 units of the Z1 were handcrafted in a limited series. Initial daily production was a maximum of six vehicles. The introductory price was DM 80,000 and later rose to DM 89,000.
