BMW R 100 RS (1979)

Vehicle description
BMW is the most important German motorcycle manufacturer and has brought many innovative models to market maturity since 1923. The company already designed real legends such as the R 32 and the R 12 in the 1920s and 1930s, but BMW was also able to impressively underline its reputation as a manufacturer of sporty motorcycles in the post-war period with attractive new creations. In 1976, the BMW R 100 was presented, which developed into a real classic in various versions. The machine designed by Hans A. Muth was the first BMW motorcycle to be delivered as standard with frame-resistant full fairing and was driven by legendary Tatort inspector Horst Schimanski in some episodes.

In this auction a beautiful BMW R 100 RS from 1979 is offered. The abbreviation RS means racing and thus refers to a particularly powerful model of this vehicle series. The dynamic motorcycle was first registered in Germany in May of the year of manufacture and was owned by a BMW plant employee for many years. He is the only previous owner of the machine with the VIN 6096304, which is ready to drive and approved. The motorcycle has so far remained accident-free and has matching numbers, and two keys are also handed over to the new owner when it is sold. The history of the BMW R 100 RS is still very comprehensible to this day, even if not all the proofs are available in the checkbook. Registration as a historic vehicle has so far been dispensed with, but the new owner can look forward to a current TÜV badge.

The machine is offered in an extremely rare colour combination, which was only available in this form at BMW for one year. The tank and large parts of the frame were painted silver, headlight trim, the substructure of the seat and the mudguards are presented in navy blue. Some areas also have decorative stripes in white and red, so that a very appealing overall picture results. The painting is in a very good overall condition, whether repair work has been carried out in the meantime, can not be said with certainty. No modifications have been made to the exterior of the BMW R 100, which includes hard-shell suitcases, since delivery. Dents or scratches could not be detected during the inspection, and there are hardly any signs of corrosion.

The motorcycle rides on original BMW alloy wheels in an attractive cross-spoke look, which, like the wheels from Continental, present themselves in mint condition. No modifications have been made to the chassis and shock absorbers, the brakes work without any restrictions on the powerful machine.

The BMW R 100 RS is also in very good condition in terms of equipment. The bench seat has been preserved without defects in the original, there are also no recognizable defects in the fittings, handles and displays. Only the windshield and the covers of the speedometer and tachometer have not passed without a trace over the years.

All instruments work as they did on the day of the first commissioning, with the BMW R 100 now covering almost 26,000 kilometres. This is a moderate mileage for a motorcycle of this age, which can be easily understood on the basis of documents and service reports.

The sporty motorcycle is powered by an air-cooled boxer engine with two valves and achieves an output of 70 hp at 980cc displacement. The power is transmitted to the rear wheel via cardan shaft and 5-speed transmission, while the R 100 RS is one of the fastest production motorcycles of its time with a top speed of over 200km/h. According to the seller, there are no defects in the engine and the technology.

The technology was put into an optimal condition in 2015. Repairs were no longer necessary from this point on, but a service check should be carried out in the near future to exclude future workshop visits.

The BMW R 100 RS presents itself in very good general condition and is a real rarity with its attractive paintwork. There are no noticeable defects in technology and equipment, so that the dynamic machine is fully available for extended tours. It actually has a "ready to travel" status and would be suitable for longer trips, but as a historic motorcycle it is much more suitable for lively excursions in the area.
