    Technik : Das Tuningunternehmen Shelby American, gegründet unter anderem von Carroll Shelby, einem Ex-Rennfahrer, der durch die Entwicklung der Shelby Cobra bereits über Kontakte zu Ford verfügte, baute ab 1965 auf Basis des Ford Mustang Tuningfahrzeuge, die teils für den Rennsport gedacht, überwiegend aber als Mustang-Hochleistungsversionen für private Kunden bestimmt waren. 1965 entstanden in Venice (Los Angeles) 562 Exemplare des Shelby GT-350, einer Hochleistungsversion des Mustang Fastback mit 228 kW (306 bhp) starkem 4,7-Liter-V8-Motor, darunter 36 GT-350R, die ausschließlich für den Rennsport konzipiert waren. 1966 fertigte Shelby mit unveränderter Technik 1438 GT-350 Fastback-Coupés sowie sechs GT-350 Cabriolets. Dazu kamen 936 Exemplare des GT-350H, einer überwiegend in Schwarz mit goldfarbenen Zierstreifen gehaltenen, nicht käuflichen Sonderserie für den Autovermieter Hertz. Die Fastback-Versionen unterschieden sich von den Vorjahresmodellen äußerlich durch Plexiglaseinsätze in den C-Säulen. 2006/2007 entstand auf Basis des aktuellen Mustang eine Neuauflage der Hertz-Version, die wiederum ausschließlich an den Autovermieter verkauft wurden. Im Gegensatz zu Produkten anderer Tuner wurden Shelby-Mustangs auch direkt über das Ford-Händlernetz verkauft.
