"The best or nothing" – this motto of Mercedes-Benz applies above all to the sindelfingen luxury class model known as the S-Class. In the midst of the oil crisis of the 1970s, however, the engineers at Mercedes-Benz were forced to meet energy saving requirements in addition to their own comfort and safety requirements for the in-house flagship. In addition to changes in the engine range and weight savings, this was also achieved by optimising the aerodynamic values. Under the direction of chief designer Bruno Sacco, a much more agile and almost graceful S-Class was created compared to its predecessor, which nevertheless did not lack the usual state-supporting and luxurious character. The new top-of-the-range model from Mercedes-Benz was presented under the factory code W126 in 1979 and enjoyed great popularity not only under Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, so that the 126 model series is still the best-selling S-Class model series in the company's history. During the long construction period from 1979 to 1991, the Sindelfingen-based company subjected the W126 to a comprehensive facelift from August 1985, which included careful revisions of the exterior as well as the use of newly developed engines. In addition to lush wood applications, the interior of the 420SEL is equipped in a fabric/velour combination in the colour anthracite. The covers have apparently been treated very carefully in the last 30 years, so that they show hardly any signs of wear.
