The SL 55 AMG, introduced in 2001, was the sporty top-of-the-line version of the SL R230 series. The roadster was powered by a newly developed 5.4-litre V8 supercharged engine with an initial output of 476 hp and 700 Nm of torque, coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. From 2002, the output rose to 500 hp, and later to 517 hp. An optional Performance Package brought technology from the SL 65 AMG. In 2008, the SL 55 AMG was replaced by the SL 63 AMG.
