Model history
The origins of the VW Beetle date back to the 1930s, when the Nazi regime wanted to develop a "people's car" for the masses – the so-called KdF car. Ferdinand Porsche played a key role in its design, and the later production model was based on his rear-engine and swing axle design. However, due to the Second World War, civilian production did not begin until 1945 under British control. In the post-war period, the Beetle became a symbol of German mobility, particularly thanks to the economic miracle and its worldwide export. It achieved cult status in the US in particular as an affordable alternative to the American road cruiser culture. Production in Germany ended in 1978, with the convertible rolling off the assembly line at Karmann in Osnabrück until 1980. The Beetle continued to be built in Mexico until 2003. With over 21 million units produced, the Beetle is one of the most successful cars of all time.
