Model history
The first Ford Mustangs were released on April 17, 1964 and exceeded sales expectations with over 400,000 models sold in the first year. Despite its popularity, many car enthusiasts were disappointed as the Mustang was technically based on the Ford Falcon and did not deliver the expected sporty performance on the road. After declining sales figures, Ford turned to Carroll Shelby, a renowned racing driver. Shelby, who wanted to build his own racing cars, was rejected by other manufacturers, but Ford recognized his genius and worked with him to develop the Ford Shelby Mustang GT.
