Technik: Mit dem Modelljahr 1971 wuchs der Mustang erneut stark in allen Dimensionen, was von verschiedenen Seiten kritisiert wurde. Die vierte Modellgeneration erreichte nicht die Stückzahlen früherer Modelle, diese stabilisierten sich aber auf niedrigem Niveau. Die Karosserien fielen wuchtiger aus, während die Glasflächen kleiner wurden. Angeboten wurden weiterhin ein Stufenheck-Coupé in Basis- und Grandé-Ausführung, ein Schrägheck-Coupé (von Ford SportsRoof genannt) in Grundversion sowie als Boss und Mach I sowie ein Cabriolet. Bekannt wurde diese Generation durch den Film „James Bond 007 – Diamantenfieber“.
