Model history:
The Thunderbird appeared a year after the Corvette and was a direct competitor for it. The new two-seater from Ford had the same body: its own chassis and rigid rear-wheel drive axle with leaf springs. But there was a significant difference - the engine was a V8 from the beginning, the Corvette still had a six-cylinder at the beginning. After the "Square Birds" (1958-1960) and the "Bullet Birds" (1961-1963), the "Classic Birds" (1955-1957) were followed by the so-called "Flair Birds" (1964-1966): This 4th Thunderbird generation differs from its predecessor mainly visually by a longer bonnet and a shorter roofline and was available as a coupé, Landau coupé and convertible.
General information about the vehicle:
A Ford Thunderbird ("Flair Bird") from the first registration in 1964 can be purchased in this auction. It comes from the USA and, after consultation with the seller, has only 2 owners to date - the matching numbers are assumed. Based on various invoices and receipts for the car, the history of this already partially restored Thunderbird can be traced to some extent. The last HU is valid until June 2024, and this Ford is already in possession of an H-registration.
Exterior paint/paint/body:
A Thunderbird of the model year 1964 is visually distinguished at the front, among other things, by its distinctive front bumper - which reaches up to the bonnet -, the radiator grille with crossbars and the "Thunderbird" lettering on the bonnet. This lettering can also be found on the side in the area in front of the doors and at the rear in the middle between the voluminous taillights. According to the seller, repainting on the burgundy Ford Thunderbird cannot be ruled out, all chrome trim on the exterior is in apparently shiny condition on the car and modifications to the body - deviating from the original condition - obviously cannot be found.
Exterior rims/brakes/chassis:
The further visual appearance is provided by chrome-wire wheels, on which tires are mounted in an estimated condition of 50-70% of their new condition, according to the seller. 30-50% attests to the current owner of the Thunderbird's brake system and inconsistencies in the area of the chassis are not present, according to him.
Interior:
Black leather can be found in the interior of this Thunderbird, which was first registered in 1964: In view of the Ford's vehicle age of almost 60 years, a good state of preservation can be found here, as no gross damage or even missing parts can be discovered. In addition to power steering, a fire extinguisher and power windows, a contemporary radio is on board as a feature. Except for the non-functioning rear windows, all equipment elements in the interior work without any problems. For more details, please have a look at the other photos and videos.
Mileage:
35,000 miles (the equivalent of about 56,330 kilometers) can be read on the speedometer. With the exception of a defective speedometer illumination, all instruments and displays in the dashboard are working perfectly. Many invoices from the last few years have been kept by the owner to prove the sums and work steps that have gone into Thunderbird.
Engine:
Under the hood sits a 6.4-liter V8 engine in this T-Bird, which is supposed to produce 300 SAE hp and directs the power of the 8 cylinders to the rear wheels via automatic transmission. In 2021, final service work took place.
Subsoil:
The current owner of the American car describes the underbody condition as rust-free and preserved. Each of the eleven generations of the Thunderbird has its own advantages and charms - the "Flair Birds" are characterized above all by their more angular bodies compared to their predecessors and offer plenty of power and displacement. A lot has been invested in this Thunderbird offered here from the first registration in 1964 in order to maintain the good condition and to have fun plus joy with this American icon for a long time to come.
